“Stylish Grit” is how we described the fascinating cover of a recent folder project that we completed. The design featured colorful well-worn construction hard hats as backdrop to some graphic elements and modern fonts.

From the visuals and taglines, we had an inkling the the company is involved in energy efficiency, but we were curious how the hard hats factored in. More importantly, as a leading national manufacturer custom presentation folders, we wanted to know how folders (and their design) are employed by a company in a surging and impactful industry. So we approached Gina Bicknese, director of central region marketing and communications for Veregy, the company behind the wonderful folders.

FOLDERPRINTERS WRITERS: Please describe your company and it’s services or specialty.

GINA BICKNESE: Veregy is an award-winning NAESCO-Accredited decarbonization company focusing on accelerating and simplifying the Energy Transition. We provide turnkey engineering and construction services designed to reduce our clients' energy and operating costs through the implementation of energy efficiency and infrastructure upgrades, smart building technology, fleet EV infrastructure, clean energy generation, and sustainability.

FPW: What makes you stand out or differentiates you from your competition (if you have any)?

GB: Veregy provides a single-source, cradle-to-grave process for our clients through energy efficiency upgrades, performance contracting, commissioning, controls, engineering services, solar generation, battery storage, as well as renovation and new construction in both the public and private sectors. With over 450 employees operating across the country, including 54 Professional Engineers, we have the technical expertise to tackle the most complex challenges. With thousands of buildings optimized and billions of dollars in real savings, we have a proven record of success and are well-positioned to take on a client’s next energy infrastructure project.

FPW: Are folders in any way a part of it?

GB: The folders offer an instant visual explanation of our services through the graphic selection of the construction hardhats with the addition of icons representing some of the additional services that we provide.

FPW: Who are your main customers?

GB: Our primary markets are public sector K-12, Federal/State/Local Government, Higher Education, Transportation, and Commercial/Industrial.

FPW: What purpose do your folders generally serve? Is it for marketing or selling? If so, What problems or challenges in marketing, selling do the folders solve for you?

GB: Marketing/selling go hand-in-hand and it is important that our audience can quickly have insight into what we provide and how this might relate to their needs. We offer many services across multiple markets so the folder was designed with the intent to graphically let our audience know that we are in the construction industry with the additional services graphically represented with the icons.

FPW: Has there been a particular instance (or instances) wherein folders helped in any of your goals? If so please share any anecdotes.

GB: Performance Contracting is a term that is often used to describe what we do, but this can sometimes be confusing for people to understand. The folders help people understand that in general we provide construction and related energy savings services and capabilities.

FPW: When do you hand them out?

GB:They are used at trade shows and as leave-behinds at meetings with potential clients.

FPW: What items do you put inside the pockets?

GB: Various informational collateral, case studies, thought leadership pieces, general marketing sell sheets, et cetera.

FPW: Have the folders proven to be effective? Do they work?

GB: We feel that they provide a quick, visual representation to help potential clients understand what it is that Veregy does. Our offering are many and are tailored to each client’s need, but the folder drills down to the core of our business.

FPW: In this digital, internet age, why use analog presentation folders?

GB: Digital information is a must for any business, and we rely heavily upon it. However, the potential client must be proactive in viewing any company’s information either by opening emails, clicking on links, remembering the name of a company, etc. There is still something to be said about hard copy materials that can be readily seen, that can leave an imprint on the viewer’s mind through a graphic, colors, etc. By integrating the use of both digital and analog marketing we hope to make it easier for potential clients to remember us and the services that we offer.

FPW: Who designs your folders?

GB: We did with our in-house marketing group.

FPW: What was your aesthetic philosophy or aim in coming up with the final design.

GB: A quick visual representation of our core services.

FPW: Are these your first professionally printed folders? What made you decide to go with Folderprinters?

GB: No, we have been using Folderprinters for several years.

FPW: If not, had you been working with a printer, and what made you switch to Folderprinters?

GB:We initially had our folders designed by an outside marketing firm. While they were professional, they were extremely expensive, required large qualities, and had long lead times. As our in-house marketing capabilities grew, we were able to take on the design and development of our own pieces to integrate our message across many platforms.

FPW: Did you look at other folder sellers’ websites? What made you choose us?

GB: Of course. Any marketing individual should review and analyze different options for services and products to find a good fit with the provider and what it is they are looking for from several different angels including quality, options, ease of process, timeline, and of course value.

FPW: What was your experience using the website? Was it easy to use?

GB: Folderprinters website is extremely easily and intuitive to use while I found many others were not.

FPW: Did you use our online design tool?

GB: I downloaded the online template and designed our folders in InDesign and then uploaded them to the website. The process was extremely easy.

FPW: Did you easily find the product you were looking for?

GB: Yes, it was easy to find the folder style and options that provided the best fit for us.

FPW: Did the final product meet your expectations?

GB: Yes! We have done several orders with Folderprinters and have always found the process to be clear, easy, and the end product folders to be a high-quality and cost-effective product that I expected to receive, with a very quick turnaround time with a good value.
